5 Tips to Make Your PS3 Run Cooler and Quieter

1) Dust= Death

dusty bottom shell

The bottom shell of a very dusty PS3.

The inside of your precious PS3 if unfortunately a dust trap. As the PS3′s fan kicks up to mitigate heat, it has the inverse effect of pulling in more dust. This build up acts like a fleece blanket around your motherboard. Heat is the ancient enemy of all electronics and the PS3 is even more susceptible due to its lead-free solder. There are a couple of ways to take care of the dust issue in your unit. I’ll list some from easiest to most involved.

  • Blow out the dust with canned air through the air intakes. The up side to this method is that you do not have to void your warranty in order to get at some of the dust. However, and thats a big however, this does not remove a majority of the dust.
  • Open your unit up and vacuum out the shell. Opening up your baby get a little trickier, be sure to not disturb the thermal paste by removing the heat sink.
  • Full system cleaning and Heat sink treatment. Inorder to do this you will need a couple things. Mainly, anti-static material to keep the motherboard from being shocked and new thermal paste to put on the PS3′s heatsink.

2) 19 Blade Fan

19 blade fan

The first round of CECHA01 PS3′s came with the superior 19 Blade fan, however to cut production costs sony switched to the 15 blade shortly after launch. This causes a couple of issues. Firstly the PS3 was originally designed to have the the 19 Blade and as you can see in the picture. Not only do they have less blades, the 15 blade fans are oriented differently. Causing eddies in the ducting inside the PS3. Secondly more blades just move more air, it’s simple mathematics 19>15.

3) Thermal Paste

arctic silver 5

The thinness of the arctic silver 5 does not allow for good contact.

Thermal Paste and it’s proper application is a point of contention in the Playstation community. One of the most commonly championed pastes, that just doesn’t cut it, is Arctic silver number 5. There is two major concerns with number AS5. First of all it’s just to thin (reference under the “cation” section) and contains sliver which is electrically conductive. The heat sink in a PS3 is not spring loaded like most PC’s, therefore inorder to maximize contact, a thicker paste is required. The heat sink type also leads itself to a slightly different application method. It involves “tinting” the heatsink and “beading” the heatplate as shown below.

Thermal Paste application

The combination “tinting” and the “dotting” method insures maximum coverage.

We have done extensive testing across all the PS3′s we have repaired and have found that Arctic Silver Ceramique 2 is the best paste for the PS3. It is ceramic biased and it’s tri-layer makeup allows for the best contact. Ceramique 2′s ceramic base allows for a shorter cure time 25 hours vs 200 hours AS5 requires.

4) Thermal Pads

Thermal Pad

This Thermal pad is marked for a CECHA01

An important but often overlooked way to control heat in a PS3 is with new Thermal Pads. The factory pads are brittle and full of dust, this severely limits the thermal conductivity of the pad. The Thermal Pads we recommend have a high thermal conductivity 3 w/mk (US rating, stricter than international/chinese standards) and are fiberglassed reenforced to prevent ripping.

Excess motherboard heat is the direct cause of the YLOD and these thermal pads are instrumental in pulling heat away from the motherboard. These Pads in conjunction with the Ceramique 2 thermal paste will completely overhall the thermal conductivity of your PS3. Keeping your PS3 cool and preventing the Yellow Light of Death.

5) Fan Mods

X-flow fan mod

*Warning* This is only for the more adventurous PS3 owners. The<youtube link> X-Flow fan mod as a work around the issue of the PS3 pulling in air that mingles with it’s exhaust.

As you can see the PS3 kicks exhaust out the back and then pulls in “cool” air directly above! The X-flow pulls in cool air right over the GPU+CPU without drastically effecting the ascetic of the PS3. The X-flow also does not dramatically increase the amount of dust the PS3 will pull in like som other fan mods.

What is the Yellow Light of Death (YLOD)?

Click here for a video, Yellow Light of Death. It shows exactly what a Yellow Light of Death is.

The Short Story:  A “Yellow Light of Death” or “YLOD” is an error code given off by the Playstation 3. It means that during the heath checks your PS3 goes through during its boot sequence, something has failed. Thus the system immediately shuts down.  For most people this relates to their graphics chip; although it can be a capacitor, power supply, HDD and other things. Our PS3 diagnostics can identify exactly what your PS3 needs to be repaired.

The Long Story
When computer systems like the Playstation 3 turn on they go through a boot sequence. This runs things like the BIOS or POST operations depending on the systems configuration, firmware and programming. These start up operations occur very quickly. During boot sequence the PS3 does a quick health check to insure that the componentry inside the system is working correctly. If it isn’t, it will immediately shut down and display the error knowns as the Yellow Light of Death.

For a vast majority of people this means the same thing. The graphics processing unit (GPU) has become disconnected from the mother board. The GPU is called the RSX chip inside of the Playstation 3. It is what is called a Ball Grid Array chip or BGA. These chips are named after their connection with the mother board. The RSX chip has hundreds of tiny solder balls (arranged in a grid, hence the name of the chip) that connect it with circuit board.

In the PS3, the solder that is used is lead-free due to environmental restrictions of Europe and other regulations. Over time after hundreds of hours of usage and thermal cycles (heating up and cooling down) This solder becomes brittle and little fractures from (see picture below). When this happens your unit will display the Yellow Light of Death.

This is a picture of a fractured solder ball of the Playstation 3.

The Bad News: It is a difficult problem to fix at home. To properly repair a Yellow Light of Death you need professional equipment that cost thousands of dollars. Some recommend taking a heat gun to fix this problem. This is not a recommended repair method and can do permanent damage to your system.

The Good News: Professionals can repair these fractures in the solder. We recommend that you get your PS3 repaired by a shop with experience. Make sure they have professional equipment to do the job right and that they offer the warranties to back it up. Check out our PS3 Repair Services.

The Reball vs. The Reflow

There are two common repairs for the Yellow Light of Death. The first is called a “Reflow” This is where the solder already on the board is is repaired. The second is called a “Reball” this is where the solder is replaced completely with new solder. Both are legitimate repairs but the reball tends to be more reliable. For more information check out our other posts.

gEt Ur YLoD RePaIreD For FrEE!@! | Beware of quick fix PS3 repair guides….

So you have the YLOD and you go to the almighty Google for its redemption. You hope and pray for an easy and cheap solution. You will quickly find what we call “quick fix repair guides”. If you have search “PS3 Repair” you will know exactly what guides I am talking about.

All of the guides promise to show you how to “permanently fix your PS3 in less than one hour with completely unique methods”. They have “testimonials” and PS3 “Repair Men” (Notice how they don’t call them electronics engineers or even technicians; cheap and sleazy salesmanship at its finest.) Some of their claims and pages would make the sham wow guy blush. Unfortunately many of their “permanent repairs” lead to permanent failures.

Let me break the illusion, they are all essentially the same thing: the heat gun repair trick. Don’t pay $30 to $60 for a guide that is essentially free on youtube.

I think it is hard for me to express how bad of an idea taking a heat gun to your PS3 in order to “repair it”. It is important that you read and understand this. You don’t have to send it to us for repair but we see way too many people damage their PS3 beyond any repair. We hear this every day. Seek a professional and reliable PS3 repair before it is too late, keep reading for further explanation.

Let me back up for those of you who don’t know about the heat gun trick. See our other posts for more information.

Long story short, most cases of the Yellow Light of Death (YLOD) is caused by the solder connection under you graphics chip (GPU) fracturing. This causes the board to be unable to see the GPU during start up, so the PS3 will turn itself off. Leaving you without your save games and many times with a game stuck in your drive. So to fix it the quick fix guides recommend you take apart your Playstation 3 and expose the main board. Then you are supposed to take a heat gun to it.

There is major problems with the heat gun trick. (It is called a trick for a reason) We can sum it up in one sentence, A heat gun is designed to dry paint.
No really think about it. So in order to fix your PS3 you need to get the solder under you graphics chip to 230 C to be fully repaired. If you heat your printed circuit board beyond 235 C you start to risk damage to the board.  If you don’t hit 230 C it won’t be fixed properly. So you have a +/- 5 degree range that you need to hit for an ideal home reflow. Go to hot and you will burn up your GPU. Now how accurate do you think a heat gun is?Not at all accurate. It is meant to dry paint, not repair electronics.
Your GPU and board is a mixture of glass, plastics and metals. When you overheat it and kill your chip. Your PS3 is dead and beyond repair.
On the other hand, if you don’t heat your PS3 enough, it will fail within a couple of days to a few weeks if you are lucky.

I could go on but you are getting the idea. Although the playstation 3 “repair guides” promise a permanent repair most of the time in the long run they will lead to a permanent failure. On top of this most of the time they don’t have a reassembly video, Good Luck!

It is one thing to replace broken parts but fixing a Yellow Light of Death  is a difficult task. Don’t waste your time and money; get a professional and reliable repair from a company specializing in PS3 repair. We can fix your YLOD in no time.
We have fixed thousands of PS3s and we can get yours fixed right. We have thousands of dollars of professional equipment to give you a reliable repair. If you decide to attempt a repair you drastically reduce the chance of success.

Thinking about buying a guide, want to talk to a PS3 technician about it? or [email protected]
